Zo enige dagen na de verkiezingen vraag je je wel af wie van je buren op de VVD heeft gestemd. In Amsterdam heeft 19% van de kiesgerechtigden op de VVD gestemd; in andere gebieden is dat zelfs 40-45%. Eerder in dit weblog heb ik VVD stemmers al ingedeeld in criminelen en dommen. Duidelijk is wel dat de VVD een partij is die enkel voor de rijken zorgt en er geen been in ziet om meer mensen de armoede in te storten. Dat is niet alleen asociaal maar ook een daad van agressie. Als mensen steeds meer hun recht op arbeid, voedsel, inkomen, onderdak en scholing verliezen door rechtse maatregelen, en als je ziet dat Griekenland nu door Europa gedwongen wordt tot mensonterende bezuinigingen, dan vraag je je toch af hoe dat zo komt en waarom dat geaccepteerd wordt door een deel van de bevolking.

One person in every hundred is a psychopath. With a global population approaching 7 billion, this puts the global total of psychos at roughly seventy million.
Seventy million psychopaths! Think of it: roughly twice the population of Canada. That’s a lot of psychos to deal with. And, as we all know from American Psycho, the problem with the upper echelons of business and finance is that fucking loons can so easily rise to the top.
This is, essentially, the claim of an article run earlier this summer on Truthout. In “How Will the 99% Deal With 70 Million Psychopaths?,” Joe Brewer asks that we consider the pernicious effects of a business culture in which avarice and ruthlessness are encouraged and thereby provide a stomping ground for psychopaths to flourish.
But this gloss overlooks much more serious problems posed by the structural composition of capitalism. Indeed, it reiterates a species of argument endemic to the liberal-left: that “unfettered” capitalism is the problem of the modern world. The solution, of course, is that it just needs some fettering—or perhaps mass expulsions of psychopaths.
And here’s where the left-liberal critique of capitalism falls apart.
Capitalism relies on endless competitive accumulation. This process is as relentless as it is remorseless. Human flourishing is not its aim.
Capital accumulated is used to accumulate more capital. Its expansion is exponential; it does not slow down when psychopaths at the helm are censured. Indeed, it is fair to say that, despite the ostensible widespread presence of psychopaths in positions of policy control, there must be many times more non-psychopaths than psychopaths acting as willing functionaries of the oligarchic class.
But it is telling that even those who might fairly be accused of bearing sympathy for wealth disparity in the name of productivity — apologists for our “psychopathic overlords” — imagine that things are not so bad as they actually are and, further, would prefer far greater equality in spite of their class and political persuasion.
A genocide is not simply orchestrated by a top-down cabal of lunatics. Rather, it is conditions on the ground and the active participation of countless non-psychopaths which ensure the execution of such dreadful activities. To put it simply: Genocides, like the “externalities” of capitalism, are in and of themselves instantiations of “psychopathy,” regardless of the number of psychopathic agents engineering their implementation. The problem is systemic, not a result of “bad apples.” A system which rewards avarice is problematic because it is a system which rewards avarice, not because it allows canny crazies to ride slipstream."
Laten we dus aannemen dat kapitalisten geen psychopaten zijn, maar dat ze een systeem hebben opgebouwd dat eenvoudigweg geen rekening houdt met 99% van de bevolking. Zij steken hun koppen in het zand. Het systeem werkt met propaganda en mythes. Maar toch worden tegenwoordig op grote schaal oorlogen gevoerd waarin miljoenen mensen uitgemoord worden. Het doel is economische overheersing, de macht over olievelden. Dat kan rationeel verklaard worden als een poging tot overleven. Maar het wordt waanzin als daardoor miljoenen anderen het recht op leven ontnomen wordt. We hebben met mekaar afgesproken dat we oorlogen moeten vermijden.
Is massamoordenaar Breivik een psychopaat? Je kunt ook bij hem twee kanten op. Hij kan rationeel (maar fout) oordelen dat hij bedreigd wordt en zich daarom het recht heeft toegekend om anderen te vermoorden. Of je kan zeggen dat hij een psychopaat is die zich heeft losgemaakt van onze menselijke doelstellingen zoals die zijn vastgelegd in de Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens en geen geweten heeft.
Is Hillary Clinton – die lacht als ze te horen krijgt dat Osama bin Laden is vermoord – een psychopaat of een rationeel denkende politica die het beste met haar land voorheeft?

Er is veel voor te zeggen al die politieke moordenaars als psychopaten te beschouwen. Mensen als Breivik en Clinton functioneren verder normaal in onze maatschappij. Maar zij koesteren wel zonder twijfel een psychopathische persoonlijkheidsstoornis, d.w.z. een antisociale persoonlijheidsstoornis waarbij het geweten uitgeschakeld wordt. Het probleem is dat deze stoornis in onze egoïstische neoliberale maatschappij niet als probleem wordt gezien zolang mensen zich normaal gedragen in hun persoonlijke leven en hun openbare leven in de politiek of het bedrijfsleven hebben losgekoppeld van hun geweten.
Wat hier speelt is de banaliteit van het kwaad, het probleem van onze moderne tijd. Het kwaad zit op een haast onopgemerkte manier in het systeem, het ontwikkelt zich van klein tot groot, het omwikkelt zich met rationele verklaringen, het maakt miljoenen mensen zonder dat ze er erg in hebben medeplichtig.
Kapitalistische ondernemingen werken volgens hetzelfde principe. Ondernemingen als Goldman Sachs hebben hun geweten uitgeschakeld. Geld was hun god. En miljoenen mensen zijn medeplichtig gemaakt. In gewoon taalgebruik zeg je "Dit is waanzin!". Zijn deze gewetenloze lieden medisch gezien psychopaten? Nee. Het is wel van cruciaal belang om dit soort waanzin een halt toe te roepen. Of we te maken hebben met 70 miljoen psychologisch geregistreerde psychopaten of banale kapitalisten doet niet ter zake.
