Waar komen misdaad en geweld toch vandaan? Sommigen zoeken de oorzaak bij verval van normen en waarden, anderen bij sociale ongelijkheid, weer anderen vinden dat chemische vervuiling verantwoordelijk is. Feit is dat onze maatschappij doordrongen lijkt van misdaad. Van frauderende vastgoedhandelaren en banksters tot Kutmarokkanen. Maar geldt dat niet voor alle tijden en maatschappijen? Het is in elk geval een goed teken dat we onszelf de vraag stellen wat we eraan kunnen doen. Wat goed is en wat kwaad is varieert wel eens in de loop der tijden en in diverse landen. Politiek is in veel gevallen een kwestie van recht praten wat krom is.

Was het maar zo eenvoudig of onschuldig. Misschien is het consumeren van Cola en Pepsi ook verantwoordelijk voor de verloedering, want Cola en Pepsi zijn eigenlijk pesticiden.

In 1994, Rick Nevin was a consultant working for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development on the costs and benefits of removing lead paint from old houses. This has been a topic of intense study because of the growing body of research linking lead exposure in small children with a whole raft of complications later in life, including lower IQ, hyperactivity, behavioral problems, and learning disabilities.
But as Nevin was working on that assignment, his client suggested they might be missing something. A recent study had suggested a link between childhood lead exposure and juvenile delinquency later on. Maybe reducing lead exposure had an effect on violent crime too?
That tip took Nevin in a different direction. The biggest source of lead in the postwar era, it turns out, wasn't paint. It was leaded gasoline. And if you chart the rise and fall of atmospheric lead caused by the rise and fall of leaded gasoline consumption, you get a pretty simple upside-down U: Lead emissions from tailpipes rose steadily from the early '40s through the early '70s, nearly quadrupling over that period. Then, as unleaded gasoline began to replace leaded gasoline, emissions plummeted.
Intriguingly, violent crime rates followed the same upside-down U pattern. The only thing different was the time period: Crime rates rose dramatically in the '60s through the '80s, and then began dropping steadily starting in the early '90s. The two curves looked eerily identical, but were offset by about 20 years.
Put all this together and you have an astonishing body of evidence. We now have studies at the international level, the national level, the state level, the city level, and even the individual level. Groups of children have been followed from the womb to adulthood, and higher childhood blood lead levels are consistently associated with higher adult arrest rates for violent crimes. All of these studies tell the same story: Gasoline lead is responsible for a good share of the rise and fall of violent crime over the past half century."
Voeg daarbij een maatschappij met veel overheidsgeweld als de nog steeds 'leading' VS, die in de hele wereld oorlogen voert, miljoenen mensen uitmoordt en in eigen land een florerende wapenhandel bevordert, en waar kinderen 'opgevoed' worden met gewelddadige videospelletjes, dan heb je al een situatie waarin Sandy Hook tot de dagelijkse mogelijkheden behoort.
Er werd en wordt nog steeds beweerd dat geweldspellen geen invloed hebben op de jeugd. Dat is in zijn algemeenheid een foute bewering. Dat geweldspellen zijn toegelaten is al een teken dat geweld in grote mate geaccepteerd is en normaal wordt gevonden als amusement. Als kinderen dan ook nog elke dag mediabeelden te zien krijgen van oorlogen en rebellie dan hoort het bij de dagelijkse gang van zaken. Als diezelfde jeugd, geïndoctrineerd met een 'Amerikaanse droom' die hun alle vrijheid garandeert, in zijn persoonlijke wensen gefrustreerd wordt dan heb je alle voorwaarden bij mekaar voor brisante uitspattingen. Jongeren die hun eigen moreel besef hebben ontwikkeld zijn niet gevoelig voor geweldspellen, maar anderen die dat moreel besef missen, door wat voor oorzaken ook, falend onderwijs, nationalisme, armoede, psychologische of psychiatrische problemen, op hun beurt mogelijk veroorzaakt door luchtvervuiling, sociale achterstanden of nationalisme, kunnen makkelijk ontsporen.

Onze maatschappij is doordrongen van geweld. De neoliberale ideologie is een van de motoren van misdaad en fraude. Er worden miljarden verdiend aan geweldamusement. Zelfs in onze gezondheidszorg gaat het niet meer om mensen maar om geld. Zo eenvoudig sluipt geweld naar binnen, de normen zijn verlegd, men houdt simpelweg geen rekening meer met mensen. Oorlogen worden gevoerd om economisch gewin. Dat vereist meestal een sterk nationalisme om die oorlogen te rechtvaardigen. De vreemde andere verdient geen leven. Het resultaat van recente westerse oorlogen is verschrikkelijk. En er komt maar geen eind aan die waanzin.
