Vanmiddag vijf uur Europese tijd is het zover, Trump wordt president. Bij DWDD heeft Twan Huys het al gehad over ‘the designated survivor’, de genomineerde overlevende, voor als Trump en zijn entourage neergeschoten worden. Altijd een leuk item voor sensatiegeile journalisten. Zelfs Arte heeft vanmiddag de film I wie Ikarus geprogrammeerd. Het gaat over een president die neergeschoten wordt.
Dat de intelligentsia op deze platte manier een boodschap overbrengt is onvoorstelbaar. Hoeveel Nederlanders zullen straks tv zitten te kijken met de hoop op een ‘desginated survivor’? Trump heeft zijn handen nog niet eens vies gemaakt zoals bijna alle vorige Amerikaanse presidenten dat gedaan hebben, en de hele meute staat weer te morren en zelfs te meppen dat het een lust heeft. Daar schieten we dus niets mee op. Als Hillary was gekozen dan kon ze zonder blikken en blozen een oorlog beginnen met Rusland en geen mens die daar aanstoot aan zou hebben genomen. Wat de progressieve, intelligente, westerse mens wil is eigenlijk gewoon iemand die goed kan liegen, mooie woorden spreekt en verder doorgaat met moorden en branden. Het is een trieste ontwikkeling. Daardoor komt de democratie steeds verder in het gedrang. Niet de wet telt, maar das gesunde Volksempfinden. Van welke kant ook, dit kan niet goedgaan.
Obama heeft Chelsea Manning vrijgelaten, een mooi gebaar, even zijn handen in onschuld wassen, maar verder is hij net als andere Amerikaanse presidenten een oorlogsmisdadiger. Onder zijn bewind is de rassenhaat toegenomen, daar heeft hijzelf alleen indirect schuld aan, maar hij heeft het niet kunnen verhinderen.

What does the administration have to show for eight years of fighting on so many fronts? Terrorism has spread, no wars have been “won” and the Middle East is consumed by more chaos and divisions than when candidate Barack Obama declared his opposition to the invasion of Iraq.”

The Intercept: "Democrats, still reeling from their unexpected and traumatic election loss, as well as a systemic collapse of their party, seemingly divorced further and further from reason with each passing day, are willing — eager — to embrace any claim, cheer any tactic, align with any villain, regardless of how unsupported, tawdry, and damaging those behaviors might be.
The serious dangers posed by a Trump presidency are numerous and manifest. There is a wide array of legitimate and effective tactics for combating those threats: from bipartisan congressional coalitions and constitutional legal challenges to citizen uprisings and sustained and aggressive civil disobedience. All of those strategies have periodically proven themselves effective in times of political crisis or authoritarian overreach.
But cheering for the CIA and its shadowy allies to unilaterally subvert the U.S. election and impose its own policy dictates on the elected president is both warped and self-destructive. Empowering the very entities that have produced the most shameful atrocities and systemic deceit over the last six decades is desperation of the worst kind. Demanding that evidence-free, anonymous assertions be instantly venerated as Truth — despite emanating from the very precincts designed to propagandize and lie — is an assault on journalism, democracy, and basic human rationality. And casually branding domestic adversaries who refuse to go along as traitors and disloyal foreign operatives is morally bankrupt and certain to backfire on those doing it."
Er valt veel aan te merken op Trump, maar men kan niet zover gaan dat de protesten tegen Trump uitmonden in een blamage voor de democratie. Ga tekeer tegen zijn beleid, maar niet omdat hij zo eerlijk is over zijn opinies, die zullen in de praktijk mogelijk wel anders en beter uitpakken - we zien later wel; Bill Blowjob Clinton was op zijn manier ook geen lieverdje. En laten we niet vergeten dat Clinton met zijn intrekking van de Glass-Seagall Wet, de veroorzaker was de bankcrisis. Deze wet was bedoeld om speculatie door commerciële banken, spaarbanken, te beperken. Het opheffen van deze wet gaf spaarbanken de mogelijkheid om op grote schaal te speculeren en op de casinotoer te gaan, en te rommelen met derivaten. Daardoor ontstond een zeer groot risico waardoor sommige spaarbanken over de kop gingen. En zelfs onze pensioenen in gevaar kwamen. Toen Trump de verkiezingen had gewonnen, steeg de rente en de dekkingsgraad van onze pensioenfondsen. Ik hoop dat er meer positieve ontwikkelingen komen. Zelfs de haviken krijgen een goedkoper JSF gevechtsvliegtuig. En laten we eerlijk wezen, het grootste gevaar voor de wereldvrede komt van de VS en de expansie van de NAVO, en het lijkt erop alsof Trump daar niet meer zo rigide achter staat. Dat biedt kansen.

That the menace of rapacious power - rampant long before the rise of Trump - has been accepted by writers, many of them privileged and celebrated, and by those who guard the gates of literary criticism, and culture, including popular culture, is uncontroversial. Not for them the impossibility of writing and promoting literature bereft of politics. Not for them the responsibility to speak out, regardless of who occupies the White House.
Today, false symbolism is all. "Identity" is all. In 2016, Hillary Clinton stigmatised millions of voters as "a basket of deplorables, racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic - you name it". Her abuse was handed out at an LGBT rally as part of her cynical campaign to win over minorities by abusing a white mostly working-class majority. Divide and rule, this is called; or identity politics in which race and gender conceal class, and allow the waging of class war. Trump understood this.
This is not an American phenomenon. A few years ago, Terry Eagleton, then professor of English literature at Manchester University, reckoned that "for the first time in two centuries, there is no eminent British poet, playwright or novelist prepared to question the foundations of the western way of life”.
More to the point: when will a genuine movement of opposition arise? Angry, eloquent, all-for-one-and-one-for all. Until real politics return to people's lives, the enemy is not Trump, it is ourselves."
Geef Trump een eerlijke kans, demonstreer en protesteer over specifieke zaken, maar haal de democratie niet onderuit. En wees eerlijk over Obama en Clinton.
